Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale

The Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS) is one of the tools used to assess mood in women during pregnancy and for the first 12 months after their baby is born. This is not intended to provide a diagnosis – only trained health professionals should do this.

Postpartum depression is the most common complication of childbirth. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is an effective way of checking for depression during this time of life. Questions 1, 2, & 4 are scored 0, 1, 2 or 3 with the top answer scored as 0 and the bottom answer scored as 3. Questions 3, 5 - 10 are score in the reverse. The maximum possible score is 30 with higher numbers indicating worse distress. It is not a replacement for seeing a doctor.
