This morning, PADA Kaumātua Joanne Rama and her daughter, Mothers Matter Ambassador Te Rauhiringa Krystal-lee Brown, appeared on Breakfast on TVNZ with Jenny-May Clarkson.
TVNZ reports: “The leading cause of death for women who are pregnant or have just given birth is suicide, with wāhine Māori making up 57%. Mothers Matter’s Te Rauhiringa Brown says there are unrealistic expectations and pressures on mothers after they have had children and there needs to be change to ensure mothers are not discharged without after-birth care.”
We are so grateful that they were able to shine a light on our maternal mental health system and talk about what we need to do to fix it.
Jo also touched on the EPDS Screening tool for māmā, whānau as well as health professionals to use, which can help direct people to understand what they are feeling, and where to get help.
